Safiya Aijazi, MD

Safiya Aijazi, MD

Biography

Safiya Aijazi, MD, MPH, was born in a seaside town north of Boston and spent her childhood between New England and Indonesia. She studied international relations, focusing on global health, nutrition, and the environment, followed by graduate study in public health and biostatistics. Recruited by the FBI, she ultimately chose to pursue medicine. She later found her way back to family, completing her psychiatry training at Dartmouth across New Hampshire and Vermont while raising her son.

Safiya received the Tufts University Presidential Award for Citizenship and Public Service and was named a Harry S. Truman Scholar. At Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, she received the Ralph P. Leischner, Jr., MD, Memorial Scholarship and an AACAP Life Members Mentorship Grant in support of her longstanding interest in child and adolescent mental health. She has also served as an APA Foundation Public Psychiatry Fellow. Her interests include community and addiction psychiatry, psychotherapy, advocacy for survivors of abuse and intimate partner violence, and the intersection of migration, culture, identity, and mental health.

Outside of medicine, Safiya loves life and is happiest sharing it with family and friends. She enjoys group fitness classes, conversation and connection, skiing, surfing, reading, thatched-roof cottages, mosaic art, and the occasional trampoline park. She is thrilled to continue her training at Brown and hopes to make Rhode Island home with her husband of 10 years and, one day, open a gallery to bring Indonesian art and music to the Ocean State. Depending on who you ask, she may also answer to “Dr. Jazzy.”
